History

The bastion was built in the 1890s by Asaf Pasha under Sultan Abdülhamid II to secure the Dardanelles. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, artillery troops, mostly German, were trained here before the great naval battle of the Dardanelles, and the bastion served as a command headquarters.

It was registered as a monument in 1976 and reopened as a museum and park after restoration on 9 October 2018.

The museum

Ten bonets (magazines) and nine gun platforms were turned into a museum telling the story of the First World War and the Gallipoli campaign in chronological order: objects from the reign of Abdülhamid II, weapons, photographs of commanders, soldiers’ letters, a model of the Gülcemal ferry, Atatürk’s attack order and personal belongings, and uniforms and weapons of Anzac, Ottoman and French soldiers.

The ninth and tenth bonets host temporary exhibitions. Outside are the Gallipoli miniature area and Albatros aircraft models.
